TRIBUTE PAID TO LATE REV.FR.STANLEY ABEYSEKERA BY THE OLD BOYS UNION SJC – PUBLISHED IN THE LAST SJC OBU NEWSLETTER.

Golden Jubilee of Rev. Fr. Stanley Abeysekera (1963-2013).

The 10th Rector of St. Joseph’s College, Rev. Dr. Bernard Stanley Abeysekera celebrated his sacerdotal golden jubilee on the 21st of December 2013. The event was marked with a concelebrated Holy Mass with Fr. Abeysekera as the Chief Celebrant. Joining Fr. Abeysekera among other Priests were two other Rectors of the School, Rev. Fr. Sylvester Ranasinghe, the outgoing Rector and Rev. Fr. Travis Gabriel the incoming Rector.

At the conclusion of the Mass the Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith addressed the gathering recalling the great contribution that Rev.Fr. Abeysekera had made to the priesthood and to St. Joseph’s College. Present at the Holy Mass were the two Archbishops Emeriti of Colombo His Grace Nicholas Marcus Fernando and His Grace Oswald Gomis.

The Holy Mass was followed by a lunch attended by Priests, Nuns, past and present teachers, Old Boys and relatives and friends of Rev. Fr. Abeysekera.

Rev.Fr. Abeysekera was the Rector of St. Joseph’s College from 1983 to 1996, the fourth longest reign in the history of the school the three longest eras being that of Rev.Fr. Legoc, Rev.Fr. Peter Pillai and Rev. Fr. Charles Collins. Those of us who studied at St. Joseph’s when Rev. Fr. Stanley was the Rector recall the visionary Principal of St. Joseph’s whose work ensured that the school remained the premier Catholic School in Sri Lanka and that its students continued to effectively contribute to the Sri Lankan community.
Rev. Fr. Abeysekera, who holds a doctorate in Education from the University of London, made it his mission to uplift the educational standards of the school. However his vision for St. Joseph’s did not stop at academic excellence. He demonstrated strong leadership in every aspect of governance of St. Joseph’s College, developing the school in every aspect both physical and spiritual.

Rev.Fr. Abeysekera as a teacher and Rector inculcated in the students the values of a multi religious and multi-cultural community. This writer recalls on the day after Vesak how Rev.Fr.Abeysekera spoke to the students at the assembly in the College Chapel of the common values of love and compassion the great religions of the world share, recalling the words of Amaradewa’s Song “Ada Van Vu Denethin Galana….”.

Twenty Five Years ago on Rev.Fr. Stanley Abeysekera’s silver jubilee Rev.Fr. Chrispin Leo his then Vice Rector had this to say of him in the Blue and White Magazine: “ In all he does what matters most is his Priesthood. It is the commitment to Jesus that compels him to do the best for the Institute and Students. In all his dealings he tries to be a man of God and a Priest of God.” (Vol 66 1986-1988)

We wish one of the best loved Rectors of this school many more fruitful years in the vineyard of the Lord.

TRAVICE
Old Peterites of the pre-seventies era got together at Randiya Hotel in Moratuwa on May 24th and had a rollicking time. The event was subsidized by the Pre-70s Group and a nominal charge of Rs. 1000 was levied to defray incidental costs associated with the event. It was a celebration of fellowship and camaraderie combined with a nostalgic reunion of Old Peterites living in Sri Lanka and abroad.

Harold Jansz, President of the Pre-70s Group, Malcolm Atton his able General Secretary, Eraj Fernando, Algi Wijewickrema, Retd. Major Jayantha Atapattu, former IGP Sri Lanka Police Chandra Fernando, Indra Cumaranatunga, Angelo Gooneratne, 60s Peterite Cricket captain Travice Fernando, and opening pair of the 60s Ravi Fernando & Adithiya de Silva were all at hand to boost the attendance. A special guest was Upali Obeyesekere, President of the joint Josphian-Peterite Alumni Association of Canada who was on holiday in Sri Lanka.

A splendid time was had by all!

A “Stag” get together of the “Old Peterites’ Group of Pre 1970” will be held on Sunday, 24th May, 2015 at Hotel Randiya, 389 Koralawella, Moratuwa, from 10.00 A.M onwards. A great opportunity once again to meet and greet fellow Peterites’ of the Pre 1970 era.

The cost of participation is Rs.1,000/- per person and includes a welcome drink, buffet lunch, limited local hard liquor and beer, chasers and bites. You are also welcome to bring your own liquor including beer, free of corkage. A token will be issued on Registration at the event for the buffet lunch.

The subsidy extended to participants is made possible thanks to the generous support received from our fellow Peterites’ at our annual get together held in November, 2014. The Quadrangle Magazine is the brainchild of Old Peterite Sujith Silva who has successfully got together a coterie of reputed journalists and old boys from St. Peter's College, St. Joseph's College, St. Anthony's College (Katugastota) and St. Benedict's College to bring out a worthy publication. It is a collector's item and the inaugural hit the stands a few last month and is available in Sri Lanka, U.K., Australia, New Zealand and Canada.

Canadian residents, please call Upali Obeyesekere, President of JPAA Canada (416-445-5390) for a copy of the Quadrangle. It is a worthy literary effort and Sujith Silva must be congratulated for his initiative and hard work in putting this splendid magazine together. This magazine will interest the select group of "Saints" schools – Antonians, Bens, Peterites and Joes!

The word ‘Quadrangle’ may mean an empty space or a design with four points and six lines to some. But for those who spent some part of their lives in a Quadrangle in an institution, this would mean plenty of memories. It was a place to meet and to play and to share stories amongst friends. Of course in between a place to get reprimanded in public for all the misdeeds.  Nevertheless, those who grew up in Quadrangles, like you and me, and all those who come from Quadrangular schools would place great value and respect not only to the institution but also to those who guided them to become who they are today. Some friendships built at Quadrangles last for a lifetime with fond memories lingering in our minds.

We moved on, like rest of the world but hardly have we forgotten those values inculcated and the learning’s we’ve had. These values help us in our endeavours to be strong, be successful and most importantly to be human beings in this demanding, ruthless yet funny World. Furthermore, our world is shrinking with the digital world bringing us closer each second.

Here we are opening a new chapter of our story, by launching the very 1st issue of Quadrangle Magazine (A bi monthly Magazine) through the learning we’ve had at Quadrangles and where they have led us, reaching out to one big community of Sri Lankans in this Island Paradise and across the world. The soft copy is uploaded to the site for your reference and you can order the print copy to which ever destination. We will keep copies (free issues) to pick up from today onwards at Old Bens Sports Club, Old Joes Sports Club, Peterite Lounge and at Old Antonian Secretariat. In addition these Magazines will be available soon at leading bookshops and super markets. You can order online too.

Russel Arnolds features in the cover story and Priyantha Ekanayake is featured as our ‘Legends’ with Manik Pereira, Dudley Thambinayagam and Air Chief Marshall Roshan Goonetileka being featured under ‘Outstanding Saints’. Feature story is the indepth analysis of 1957 Schools Cricket season featuring for the first time1st XI Cricket teams from St. Benedict’s, St. Joseph’s, St. Peter’s and St. Anthony’s. Current Schools Cricket Review featuring St. Anthony’s and St. Benedict’s 1st XI teams. We also have many stories to take you down the memory lane and captures the highlights of events held in Canada, London, Melbourne and Colombo.

The Stories begin mostly from a Quadrangle be it at Kotahena, Maradana, Bambalapitiya or Katugastota and cover the local corporate world, sports, leisure, tourism, fashion, food and entertainment. We have on stage some senior writers in Sri Lanka and guest writers from Australia, Canada and United Kingdom along with our very own up and coming writers, content generaters and photographers sharing their stories. The writers includes Lucien Rajakarunanayake, Elmo Rodrigopulle,Niel Wijeratne,Franklyn Amerasinghe, Marlon Fernandopulle, Eric Motha (Canada), Upali Obeyesekera (Canada), Lawrence Heyn (Australia),Rohantha Athukorala, Algi Wijewickrama, Ranjit J. Perera, Nigel Forbes, Mano Senaratne, Jehan Bastians, Sarah Kellapatha, Cassandra Van Heer.

We may add more stories and cover more Quadrangles as we go along. We hope you will enjoy these stories, cherish them and of course share them with your network of friends and families.

We cannot go on this journey without you. This is your platform both on print and on www.quadrangle.lk to share the stories. You are at the centre of everything we do. St. Joseph's College has successfully received a Mechanised Roller courtesy of donations from Old Boys and overseas Old Boys' Associations. SPC Building School
Today happens to be the 94th anniversary of the opening of this hallowed institution we call St. Peter's College.

It was on the 18th of January 1922 (a Wednesday to be precise) that Fr. Maurice Le Goc, Rector of St. Joseph's College, with a band of boys from St.Joseph's College, Col 10 came by train to open the school by the canal. St. Peter's has come a long way since then and now stands shoulder to shoulder with other great institutes of learning and has even surpassed in stature, some older institutes.

Appreciating St. Joseph’s College

SJC BUILDING
To the Children of St. Joseph’s, virtue is the first word in our being. Knowledge was not a collection of facts but a path towards justice and righteousness. We were taught to believe in justice as being the right thing to do by our aggrieved fellow humans whom we associated. The knowledge we gathered was a catharsis of truth and compassion.

by Dr. Ruwantissa Abeyratne

( July 7, 2016, Montreal, Sri Lanka Guardian) July is a special month for St. Joseph in Sri Lanka. It is a well-known fact that there are two major catholic schools in Sri Lanka, both in Colombo – St. Joseph’s College and St. Peter’s College. St. Joseph’s was established much earlier than its sister school, which was born as a result of the vision of Father Maurice le Goc, Rector of St. Joseph’s who, in 1921 decided to establish a branch of St. Joseph’s elsewhere in Colombo, mainly to accommodate the number of students who could not all be accommodated then at St. Joseph’s. Thus was born St. Joseph’s Colombo South, as it then was called, which is now called St. Peter’s College. Work started on 7 th of July 1921 carried under the supervision of Mr. J. R. J. Jayasuriya, an old boy of St. Joseph ‘s College. In December that year Fr. Le Goc had confidently announced at the Josephian prize giving, that St. Joseph ‘s College South will be open in January, 1922. The rest is history. St. Peters College bloomed and became a leading light in education which it remains to this day.

The month of July is very significant to both Josephians and Peterites as it was during that month that an inextricable bond was formed between the two great schools. We became brothers in Christian values and aspired for the highest standards of moral turpitude. However, we are all children of St. Joseph, irrespective of whether we attended St. Joseph’s College or not, and irrespective of our religious beliefs, nationality, race or colour, because of who St. Joseph was. He was initially the patron saint of Mexico, Canada and Belgium, until in 1870, he was declared patron of the universal church by Pope Pius IX, and in 1955 Pope Pius XII established May 1 as the “Feast of St. Joseph the Worker” to counter the Communists’ May Day.

St. Joseph is also the patron saint of the family and the afflicted. Perhaps more importantly, he is the patron saint of the new world. He was a compassionate and caring man, a man of virtue, but not of material wealth. When he took Jesus to the Temple to be circumcised and Mary to be purified he offered the sacrifice of two turtledoves or a pair of pigeons, allowed only for those who could not afford a lamb (Luke 2:24). We are all workers, members of our families and prone to affliction and mortality. We are responsible for the wellbeing of the new world and the Anthropocene. To emulate St. Joseph we must be more: we must be humble and compassionate as he was.

We attended school under the inspiring umbrella of learning St. Joseph’s offered us so that we could become virtuous and productive citizens. We attended school, to savour the fruits of virtue and of knowledge so that we could be the champions of peace and power which would eventually give prosperity to all. A handpicked faculty and staff went through our curriculum with diligence worthy of a crucible of tradition which taught us that the most important purpose of education was not to attain heights of glory, but to face difficult situations with fortitude. We were taught that the challenges we faced were fearsome, but so were our strengths. The voice of St. Joseph resonated not the misery caused by the events of 9/11 or Hurricane Katrina but by the little voice in our head which said we must go on after these tragedies, do the right thing, and help those in need. We realized that depth of the heart could not be taught intellectually. It could not be emailed or tweeted.

They resonated the fundamental truth of social justice: that without truth, justice cannot prevail, and without respect and compassion, morality cannot prevail. Our learning at St. Joseph’s reflected that social justice is about respect for human rights and dignity and that a government’s authority came from the will of the people.

The most important pearl of wisdom bestowed on us was that we must act according to a conscience that makes us comport with an autonomous code of conduct and ethics we give ourselves, interpret or declare. We must interpret the law according to our conscience and not make it or initiate it. We were made to believe in the liberty of the individual, in equal rights for all citizens regardless of race, colour, religion, creed or political belief, and in their inalienable right to participate by means of free and democratic political processes in framing the society in which they live.

At a time when our school was threatened with an arbitrary and capricious takeover by the government of the day, we resisted and won, on the fundamental premise of our school that the guarantees for personal freedom under the law is the common heritage of every Sri Lankan. We believed steadfastly in the liberty of the individual, and in the individual’s inalienable right to participate by means of free and democratic political processes in framing the society in which we lived. Our lives were shaped to become a harmonious blend of empathy and compassion flavoured with the inevitable elements of law and justice; equity and compassion.

We were taught the inexorable values of St. Joseph: that we must have a clear understanding of what is moral and the right thing to do. We were directed to act categorically and not consequentially in not treating the individual as a means but an end, and that the overall public interest in good governance is now a common feature in the modern state, and is not restricted to the academics and practitioners who bore the burden of evaluating governance in the past.

St. Joseph stood for four things, according to the scriptures: Humility – the moral virtue that keeps a person from reaching beyond himself; Chastity – the essence of virtue which we, the children of St. Joseph now stand for; Prudence – to take decisions under advisement and to judge correctly and abide by one’s moral dicta in accordance with the purpose of the act rather than its consequence; and Love for family – which is entrenched in the enduring value of always being there for our spouses and children. This should be the gospel of al of us – the children of St. Joseph.

44th Encounter: St. Peter’s College V. Trinity College – October 21 & 22, 2016

SPC v TCK 1st XI 2016

Third term fixtures of the 1st XI Schools Cricket Season has commenced, as you know the defending joint Champions of Schools Cricket Peterites led by Master Lakshina Rodrigo have been able to notch up two outright wins so far. This weekend, 21st and 22nd October they will take on Trinity College Kandy at Asgiriya grounds for the Philip-Eddie Buultjens trophy donated by former Peterite captain (1980) and outstanding Cricketer Rohan Buultjens. Rohan is the son of late Eddie Buultjens.

The Buultjen brothers born in Matara but studied in Kandy; Philip and Eddie have been two brilliant versatile sportsmen, Lionsmen produced by Trinity College who represented the hill capital school in both Cricket & Rugby with distinction. They went on to represent Ceylonese and All Ceylon teams (Philip in Cricket & Rugby and Eddie in Rugby) between 1930’s -1940’s. Elder brother Philip was a member of the champion 1st XI Cricket teams (1923 and 1924) under V.C.Shokman that hit a purple patch in annals of Trinity College where they recorded 29 wins in a row, back to back against all whom they played between 1920-1925 a record yet to be broken. Philip Buultjens excelled in Rugby and regarded as one of the finest centre three-quarters of Sri Lanka (back then Ceylon) and also carved a name for himself in the fields of Football, Hockey and Athletics. He was the 1st XV captain of Trinity College Rugby during 1923 and 1924 which gave a thrashing to hapless Royal College 1st XV sides (interestingly in 1924 Royal College 1st XV was captained by late President Hon. J.R. Jayawardene). The younger, Eddie went further by captaining the School's 1st XI (1932 & 1933) and 1st XV (1933).

What his sibling, Rohan Buultjens achieved when he turned up for St. Peter’s College between 1978-1980 is well known, two double hundreds at Joe-Pete, that too all not outs, countless other centuries against formidable opponents, the Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year and Best Batsman awards, 1000 runs in a season, representing Sri Lanka youth teams but unfortunately for reasons best known to national selectors or unknown to many he couldn’t make it to Sri Lanka test team. Whilst he was knocking on the door for a Test call up, another door was opened for him when Rohan migrated looking for greener pasture. Oh what Sri Lanka missed, another Aravinda or a Sanga perhaps? There are many interesting stories about Buultjens clan; unfortunately space doesn't permit hence parking them for another chapter.

Getting back to the all-important match on this, a tournament game and now a traditional encounter St. Peter’s College Vs Trinity College will be a cracker of a game for sure. Ironically though both schools having started their Cricket much earlier, Trinity College in 1893 and St. Peter’s College in 1927, did not play against each other till 1970. Since then there had been 43 matches with Peterites enjoying 7 wins against 2 wins by Trinity College. Peterites had a winning streak of four games in a row from 1978-1981 and their last win came in 2015 when the trophy was introduced for the first time in Asgiriya. In this year’s (2015/2016) 1st XI Tournament quarter final match, St. Peter’s managed to beat Trinity on 1st inning at the same venue. Trinity College last won against St. Peter’s College in 2011 and prior to that their solitary win was in 1998. However, since of late (since 2011) Trinity College is on their second purple patch in their Cricketing history winning Championships across all formats and beating all their traditional rivals. This year too, the Lions under the captaincy of Shanogeeth Shanmughanathan who has scored two centuries so far from four outings are on prowl with two outright wins under their belt. So the game is evenly poised, unless weather god spoil the party. Here’s wishing boys to do well up in Asgiriya. You can follow the match updates on our facebook page.

Easter Eggs
The Christian movable feast — Easter — is celebrated to commemorate the resurrection of Lord Jesus Christ from the dead three days after his crucifixion and burial. This year, Easter falls March 27 after believers celebrated Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

"And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus," reads Luke 24:2-3.

The celebrations of Easter begin with the Easter Vigil mass late in the evening of Holy Saturday and the day marks the end of 40-day-long Lent of the devotees. Thousands of Christians attend the Papal Mass in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican City, Italy.

For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas,[b] and then to the Twelve. — 1 Corinthians 15:3-5

For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. — Romans 6:9

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?" — John 11:25-26

If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. — Romans 10:9

I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death. — Philippians 3:10

Do not abandon yourselves to despair. We are the Easter people and hallelujah is our song. — Pope John Paul II

Easter is meant to be a symbol of hope, renewal, and new life. — Janine di Giovanni, author.

There would be no Christmas if there was no Easter. — Gordon B. Hinckley, religious leader.

Easter tells us of something children can't understand, because it addresses things they don't yet have to know: the weariness of life, the pain, the profound loneliness and hovering fear of meaninglessness. — Frederica Mathewes-Green, author.

Here is the amazing thing about Easter; the Resurrection Sunday for Christians is this, that Christ in the dying moments on the cross gives us the greatest illustration of forgiveness possible. — TD Jakes, pastor.

The great gift of Easter is hope – Christian hope which makes us have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can shake. — Basil Hume, late English Roman Catholic bishop.

Easter is very important to me, it's a second chance. — Reba McEntire, singer.

  • May the Lord Jesus Christ bless you in abundance and bring immense amount of happiness in your life. Happy Easter 2016.
  • Celebrate this holy week with a heart filled with peace and love towards your friends and enemies. Have a blessed Easter 2016.
  • Rejoice. He has risen. The Lord has risen. He has risen as our savior. Happy Easter.
  • May you be blessed with immense love from God, who will bring abundant happiness in your life by filling your heart with peace. Happy Easter.
  • It is the day to remember our savior, who has risen from the dead. Rejoice, that Jesus has fulfilled his promise for our well being. Easter greetings to you and your family.
  • Never lose faith in God, trust Him to see how he works wonders in your life. May the risen Lord fill your heart with compassion, joy and never-ending love. Happy Easter.

Sri Lanka under 19 cricketer Jehan Daniel played the role of savior to rescue St Joseph’s College from dire straits at 10 for 5 to a respectable 205 on the opening day of the 83rd Battle of the Saints encounter against St Peter’s College at the P Sara Oval yesterday.

By the close the game was evenly poised with St Peter’s replying with 138 for five wickets.

Daniel’s magnificent century saved St. Joseph’s the blushes and enabled them to take the upper hand.

Daniel came to the crease with his side tottering at 10 for 5 after skipper Harin Cooray had won the toss and elected to bat first. However in the first session’s play things go the way the Joes would have planned.

Under 19 player cum Peterite vice-captain and right arm fast bowler Manelker de Silva and his new ball partner Santhush Gunathilake combined together to rip through the batting line up.

Gunathilake ran through the Joes top order by making the early breakthrough in his first two overs when he dismissed openers Cameron Duruge and took the prize wicket of Nipun Sumanasinghe who has scored 1000 runs this season.

Manelker De Silva added salt to the wound of the Josephians when he got rid of Dineth Madurawela for one as St. Joseph’s slid to 3 for 3.

To make matters worse for the Joes both Thashan Perera and Havin Perera were run out due to brilliant fielding and half the Joes side was out for 10.

A sixth wicket partnership of 56 between Daniel and wicket keeper Shevan Fonseka (26) addressed the slump. The stand was ended with another run out of Fonseka following a direct throw from Ranmith Jayasena, son of Panadura SC cricketer Mangala Jayasena.

Daniel and Jehan Fernandopulle son of former Benedictine cricketer Marlon Fernandopulle took the score to 95 before Jehan was run out for 14 by Manelker de Silva’s brilliant fielding.

Daniel counter attacked making use of three dropped chances to score an unbeaten 124 off 116 balls that included 12 boundaries and five sixes. He was involved in a face saving partnership of 93 runs for the eighth wicket with left hander Pahan Perera (25) that saw St. Joseph’s to their final total.

The eighth wicket partnership between the pair broke a 67-year old record for St. Joseph’s of 66 between Adolphus Silva and Milroy Brohier in 1950.

For the Peterites who batted after tea Shalith Fernando their number four batsman hit a fine 47 before being dismissed in the penultimate over of the day. However vice-captain Manelker de Silva hung around for a solid unbeaten 40 by the close.

St. Joseph's College is a Catholic educational institution that was established in 1896 by French missionaries, with Rev Christopher Ernst Bonjean playing a leading role. The college has over 4000 students with a staff of over 200. Distinguished former students include Cardinal Thomas Cooray the first Cardinal from Sri Lanka, President Ranasinghe Premadasa and Niranjan Deva-Aditya, the first person in history to be born in one continent (Asia) and elected to parliament in another continent (UK). The motto of the college is "Fiat Lux in Scientia et Virtute", meaning " Let there be light through Knowledge and Virtue" in Latin.

In 1892, the idea of a Catholic College emerges with the proposal of the Archbishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Fr. Christopher Bonjean. On 6 January 1892, a pastoral letter was sent to all the priests espousing the desirability of building a Catholic College at St. Mary’s College premises at Mattakkuliya. In April 1892, a public meeting was held to collect funds and discuss the plans for the Catholic College.

Thereafter 27 acres of Land called the ‘uplands’ was bought by the Archbishop for this project, from the government. Later however, this land was bought back by the government with compensation, and the Catholic Church bought a land at Maradana in Darley Road from an Egyptian called Arabi Pasha for the College building.

On 12 December 1894 the foundation stone was laid by the papal delegate for Asia Rev. Msgr, Zalesbbi. In 1896, on 2 March 1896, St. Joseph’s College Colombo was declared open with 211 students in the school proper and 96 students in the preparatory school with Very Rev. Fr. Charles Collin as the First Rector. In November 1896, on 2 March, the College building was formally declared open by Governor of Ceylon West Redgeway and was blessed by Most Rev. Msgr, Zalesbbi, in the presence of the Archbishop Rt. Rev. Fr. Melizan O.M.I.

The Rector‘s office, the College office and the classrooms were all housed in the first building – the Clock Tower building of the College. The College Magazine was started in 1905. The Bonjean Hall was the third building to be completed. Fr. Charles Lytton, the second Rector, planned and supervised the building project of the Bonjean Hall.

Fr. Emil Nicholas O.M.I. was the third Rector appointed in 1910. To Fr. Emil Nicholas goes the credit of primary work on the first Religious Association of the College – the Guild of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

The Wellawatte branch of St. Joseph 's College Colombo was registered as a separate secondary school by Gazette notification No: 7575 of 2nd April, 1927 with the name St. Peter's College, Wellawatte.

The celebrations in connection with the re-naming of the College had been held on Wednesday, 29th June with the feast of St. Peter with a high mass sung by Very. Rev. Fr. M. J. Le Goc assisted by Rev. Fr. Morel and Theobald Silva. After mass, a colourful ceremony took place on the lawn in front of the college. The College flag with the colours blue, white and gold was blessed by Rev. Fr. Le Goc and hoisted.

Golden Jubilee 1922 – 1972

The year 1972 dawned with memories of that historic and glorious day when St. Peter's was inaugurated on 18th January 1922. It was celebrated with jubilation, thanks giving and a bit of reflection of the five decades that had passed. Teachers, parents, old boys, benefactors and the students had a reason to celebrate the fifty years of endeavour and achievement.

The celebrations commenced with a re-enactment of the event with 200 Josephians walking along Darley Road to the Maradana Railway Station and the train stopped at the vary same place as it did fifty years ago when they were being led by Fr. Maurice Le Goc along Kinross Avenue. The Josephians were led by their Rector Rev. Fr. Mervyn Weerakkody, Rev. Fr. Marcellinc Jayakody and Rev. Fr. Lucien Dep and were welcomed by the Peterite Band playing both college anthems. Lt. Heraclitus Jayasekera of St. Peter's was there with the Peterites to welcome them. Mr. J. A. A. Perera an Old Josephian, the only surviving person who had participated in the 1922 event was there too. The Rector Rev. Fr. Theodore Peiris welcomed the Josephians and a special Assembly was held in the Quadrangle. The celebration concluded on 22nd January, 1922 with the Thanksgiving Mass concelebrated by His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Cooray, Archbishop of Colombo.

Diamond Jubilee 1922 – 1982

Monday, 18th January, 1982 St Peter's recorded its sixty years of service in the field of education since the Archbishop Coudert blessed and opened the new school, St. Joseph 's College South in 1922. The occasion was celebrated in a fitting manner with a large and representative congregation that attended the concelebrated thanksgiving mass held in the open air college quadrangle. The Mass was held in the presence of sixty priests who concelebrated the mass with the Chief celebrant His Lordship Oswald Gomis, the auxiliary Bishop of Colombo. His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Cooray, Archbishop Emeritus of Colombo and their Lordship Frank Marcus Fernando and Edmund Fernando O.M.I. were also present.

Due to the great strides made in a short time in the fields of studies, sports and the improvement in discipline under the leadership of Fr. Wickremasinghe resulted in large the number of applications being received for new admissions. In order to cope this situation, two new houses were added in the Diamond Jubilee year, Basil House named after the second rector Rev. Fr. Basil A. Wiratunga O.M.I. and Arthur House named after the third Rector Rev. Fr. Arthur N. Fernando. These houses participated for the first time in the Diamond Jubilee athletic Meet held on June, 26th 1982.

In the diamond Jubilee year, the College Cadet platoon was re-introduced after a lapse of twenty years. More significant however was the elevation on the 15th July, 1982 of the first Old boy Bishop, Rev. Fr. Dr. Henry Joy Gunawardene as the first Bishop of the new Diocese of Anuradhapura – He paid an official visit to College and was given a fitting reception. Also, the Nancy Emily Wickremasinghe Scholarship was established in the Diamond Jubilee Year which was awarded to the best student entering University presented by a loyal Old boy Mr. Anton Wickremasinghe, Chairman of the Film Corporation. The diamond Jubilee celebration came to a close with the prize giving held on 3rd of December, 1982, where His Excellency J.R. Jayawardene President of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka was the Chief Guest. On this day the College hall was named as the 'Nicholas Perera Hall' after its builder. The plaque was unveiled by President J.R. Jayawardene.
